Little Havana-National Treasure

We are off on our next adventure to Peru & Ecuador on an O.A.T.(Overseas Adventure Travel) tour—“small groups on the Road Less Traveled”. For three weeks we’ll wander the rainforests, mighty river, and villages of the Peruvian Amazon; visit the Sacred Valley around Cuzco then take the train and hike to experience Machu Picchu; and finally we fly to Quito, Ecuador and explore the Galapagos Islands by small ship.

But first we flew into Miami a couple of days early and today took a Food & Cultural walking tour of Little Havana. It was intriguing to learn the history of Miami’s vibrant Cuban heart, with art galleries, restaurants and music venues. But the Cuban culture and food was most interesting.

massive Ceiba tree which is important to the followers of Santeria (roots in the Cuban African slaves)

We tried Guava Pastelito-a puff pastry filled with guava paste
Cafe Cubano an extremely strong, sugary coffee
Chicken croquetas-which are “rationed” by mothers because they are so darn tasty
Cuban sandwich, a popular pressed pork hand food made popular by Cuban sugar mill workers
Mojito-which originated in Havana, Cuba (as far back as the 1500’s) and a favorite drunk of Ernest Hemingway
Guarapo-pressed sugarcane energy juice
Picadillo Empanada-Cuba’s version
Abuela Maria ice cream at the historic Azucar Ice Cream Co.

Domino Park

local seniors (must be over age 50) discuss politics over dominoes at Maximo Gomez Park, dubbed Domino Park by locals.

I highly recommend taking one of these kind of tours wherever you travel!
